Setting Up the EBIS Power BI Connector
This article gives the step-by-step instructions for setting up the EBIS Power BI Connector.
The EBIS Power BI Connector was developed to provide EBIS users with easy access to data within the system, allowing them to build custom reports and dashboards without a deep technical understanding of building and using APIs.
The instructions below guide you through the process of downloading the Connector, installing on your computer, and accessing EBIS data to begin building your custom dashboards and reports.
Note: You must be an EBIS Admin with Advanced Access User (AAU) permissions to get access to the API keys and Power BI Connector.
Note: Power BI is a Microsoft product and only works on Windows computers. If you have a Mac, you may need to download a Virtual Windows machine to run the program.
Step 1: Install Power BI and the EBIS Power BI Connector on your computer.
-
Ensure you have Power BI downloaded on your computer.
-
Submit a support ticket through your EBIS account or fill out this form to request access to both the API and the Power BI Connector. Support will send your API keys and access to the download folder.
-
Once you receive the folder, download the Setup.exe and EBISConnectorSetup.msi files to your computer.
-
(Optional) Store these files in an easily searchable place on your computer (i.e. Documents/Microsoft Power BI Desktop/Custom Connectors)
-
- Run the Setup.exe file and follow the install wizard. Select the file storage location and complete the process. Once completed, you will now see a file called EBIS5Beta.pqx in your Custom Connectors folder.
The EBIS Power BI Connector is now installed on your computer.
Step 2: Make the Connector visible through the "Get Data" tab in Power BI
- Open Power BI.
- Click File > Options & Settings > Options.
- Click the Security tab > Data Extensions section and select “(Not Recommended) Allow any extension to load without validation or warning” then click OK.
Step 3: Pull data from EBIS through the Power BI Connector
- Open Power BI.
- Click Get Data and select More.
- In the search bar, type "EBIS" and select EBIS 5 (Beta) (Custom), then click Connect.
- On the content screen, fill out the relevant fields:
- Sub Domain: Enter only the subdomain from your EBIS instance. For example, if you normally log into https://mrodemo.ebis5.com/, you would only include "mrodemo" in this field.
- Last Modified Date Time: Enter the earliest date you want to access data for. For example, if you want to pull information for all of 2024, you would enter the date 1/1/2024.
- Show only Relevant Columns: Choose “Yes” to show relevant columns... Relevant columns will suffice for 95% of all your reporting needs, but in specific cases you might need more data to connect tables with each other.
- Click OK.
- When the credentials window pops up, enter the API username/password combo provided by EBIS Support and click Connect.
- In the Navigator window, select the check boxes for the desired tables and click Load.
You now have EBIS data available to build custom reports and dashboards within Power BI.
